Update: Joe Biden

By Dylan Miller

At Joe Biden’s town hall meeting with potential voters in Philadelphia, PA on October 15, he talked about his COVID-19 plan, U.S. taxes, the environment, racial justice, crime in America, police reformation, the U.S. Supreme Court, bipartisanship, transgender issues, and foreign policy. Biden stated in his interview with ABC News Chief Anchorman George Stephanopoulos that during the COVID-19 pandemic, he will plan to distribute a vaccine when it becomes available. Biden also stated that he will repeal President Trump’s tax cuts for the super wealthy, will raise the corporate tax rate, and will tax manufacturers who don’t make their products in the U.S.

Biden’s plan for the environment includes investing in green infrastructure. Although he still supports fracking, he wants to maximize clean energy. Fact-checkers of the Democratic presidential candidate’s answers stated that his “environmental plan calls for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and for a massive investment in clean energy, including training fossil fuel workers for clean energy jobs.”

Biden will focus on racial justice by adding $30 billion to early childhood education. In addition, he will add a $15,000 grant for first-time home buyers. He will also initiate other programs to help people of color to build wealth.

Biden stated that he will handle crime in the United States by decriminalizing marijuana, investing in drug rehab centers for drug offenders rather than prison sentences, and create standardized prison sentences so that minorities do not spend more time behind bars than white people. Biden will create commissions of police officers, social workers, and community members to study police reform measures.

Biden was pressed by Stephanopoulos regarding the issue of packing the Supreme Court.  Biden stated that he will leave his options open by waiting to see how the Senate votes on Amy Coney Barrett as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court after the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On the issue of bipartisanship, Biden believes that once President Trump is gone, some bipartisanship will return to Congress.

Biden will rescind Trump’s executive orders that discriminate against transgender people. “There should be zero discrimination, and what’s happening is too many transgender women of color are being murdered,” Biden said.

And, finally, Biden announced that he will end the isolationism that Trump has caused.  He will mend our relationships with our allies in the world.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden is favored to win the election. Biden is favored at 87 percent, with Trump at 13 percent. As far as electoral college votes, FiveThirtyEight predicts that Biden will secure 346, and Trump will win only 192. Biden is leading with almost 13 points over his adversary.

Joe Biden is making his way to the top with more favorability than Trump. Although the President also addressed potential voters on NBC, Biden still drew higher numbers, 14.1 million viewers on ABC as opposed to Trump’s 10.9 million on NBC’s three outlets. With the final debate on October 22, the polls could change again.

  1. Nicely done. I like how you elaborated on each of his policies. Succinct, unbiased. I’ll be interested to see if Biden can fulfill these promises if he’s elected. Obviously vaccine distribution will be a priority, but what about something like decriminalizing marijuana, yano? We’ve heard calls for policy change, but nothing has been done at a federal level to change its legality in half a century. His platform seems solid if he can make it come together. I guess only time will tell.
