What is a Lie in Politics?

By Dylan Miller

Many people feel that campaign promises are basically lies that rarely come true. A politician may say whatever they feel is going to win them votes or voters. They will worry about the consequences after they get into office. Most voters don’t follow up and ask them “hey, what about such and such?” Or “what about when you told us this or that?” That’s how they get away with it.

This presidential term has been one lie after another, to the point of gaslighting the American people. The Washington Post has documented that Trump has lied over 22,000 times since he’s been in office. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/07/13/president-trump-has-made-more-than-20000-false-or-misleading-claims/ Trump became our president in November 2016, and he has been making up lies to the American people ever since. Donald Trump, who is now positive for getting the Coronavirus, is famous for doing that. Here are some lies that Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden have told during the campaign of 2020.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit our country in March 2020, Professor David Markowitz of the University of Oregon stated in his article on Forbes.com that “As of early April, Trump has told 23.3 lies per day in 2020, a 0.5-lie increase since 2019. What’s more, Trump has averaged 23.8 lies per day since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the US — another 0.5-lie increase.” https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidmarkowitz/2020/05/05/trump-is-lying-more-than-ever-just-look-at-the-data/#279a7d041e17

In the presidential debate of 2020 between Trump and Biden, the debate went on to become a total disaster with all the accusing, arguing, and fighting. Trump mocked Biden by saying, “You didn’t go to Delaware State. You graduated either the lowest or almost the lowest in your class.” https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/29/politics/fact-check-biden-trump-first-presidential-debate/index.html That is only one of Trump’s many lies during the presidential debate. Biden wasn’t referring to where he went to school, but it didn’t stop Trump from twisting the truth. However, Biden has not been completely truthful about his academic record in the past.

One of the biggest lies from Joe Biden during the debate came when he stated that the U.S. has “a higher deficit with China now than we did before.” https://www.ibtimes.com/biggest-lies-presidential-debate-between-joe-biden-donald-trump-3054451 In reality, the deficit actually decreased from $380 billion to $308 billion in 2019. Another lie from Biden while he’s been on the campaign trail is that he claimed that the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People had endorsed him. In fact, the NAACP never endorses candidates for office. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/27/politics/joe-biden-fact-check-gop-tax-cuts-naacp-endorsement/index.html

Political lies are often used to help make candidates look better than the other or to beat or compete with the other during an election. America needs and deserves a President who will not lie to us.
