Who is Amy McGrath?

By Ryan Rosenberger

Back in July 2019, Amy McGrath announced her candidacy for the US Senate by publishing an open letter video on her Twitter account. In it, she chronicles a time when she was 13 years old and she wrote a letter to her Senator telling him she wanted to fight for her country, and that women should be able to proudly serve.

She never got a response back.

“I’m Amy McGrath, and I’ve often wondered, how many people did Mitch McConnell never take the time to write back? Or even think about?” McGrath asked in the video.

Now, just a little over a year later, McGrath is well into her campaign against five-term senator and Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell.

For his re-election campaign, McConnell, who is the long-serving U.S. senator, is running on his accomplishments, citing the confirmation of two supreme court justices, “historic” middle class tax cuts and cutting government regulations, according to his website.

But who exactly is McConnell’s general election challenger, and what is she basing her campaign off of?

According to McGrath’s campaign website, her campaign mission is to “Rebuild Kentucky” by addressing the economic recession caused by the pandemic, make sure all citizens statewide have access to “affordable” healthcare, create good-paying jobs across a myriad of sectors state wide, and fight intergenerational racism and poverty by providing “adequate educational opportunities to give young people a fair shot.”

McGrath is also focusing her efforts on anti-corruption within government. According to her campaign website, McGrath wants to get “big money” out of politics by passing a constitutional amendment to overturn “Citizens United,” a 2010 Supreme Court decision that made it legal for corporations to pour an unlimited amount of money into political campaigns.

Another area of concern for McGrath is healthcare, according to her website. McGrath supports a variety of solutions to increase access to healthcare. She supports building on the Affordable Care Act, as well as a medicare buy-in for those over 55 years of age. She also supports a “Public Option” style healthcare system, where Americans would have the choice between buying their insurance on the private market, or buying into medicare.

With her extensive background as a marine corps veteran, McGrath also supports a series of policies designed to help military veterans and their families as well, according to her campaign website. McGrath says she wants to “end the forever wars,” and make use of the intelligence community before launching offensive attacks. McGrath also supports universal childcare for military veterans, increasing the VA budget for veterans healthcare, and increasing jobs and education opportunities for military spouses as well.

McGrath has branded herself as an outsider candidate, wanting to replace the “swamp” that McConnell has created in Washington. However, being in a traditionally red state, it appears she has some work to do to win over more voters, as McConnell currently holds a 12 point lead in the polls with less than a month left until the election.

  1. This is a great intro to the candidate, Amy McGrath. It really struck me that she brought up McConnell probably not having responded to a lot of his constituents. I can definitely see where there would be concern about any senator serving for 30 or so years being out of touch.
